Hitting a volleyball with power is related to the action of the hitting arm as this directly impacts what muscles get stretched or loaded as the athlete performs the draw & tilt.
Many young volleyball players learn to serve with hitting mechanics which short-term allow them to get the ball in play and have a chance to score a point. The serving mechanics learned at an early age typically involve flexing the hitting shoulder and lifting the hitting arm up overhead which long-term limits hitting pop or power.
This session first shows the typical shoulder flexion pattern learned and the advanced mechanics volleyball athletes need to develop to hit the ball harder. Then, similar to throwing a ball overhead, this session shows how to learn to stretch and load the muscles of the chest and front part of the shoulder to improve power hitting mechanics. The last part of the session shows how the coach can integrate the drills into daily practice.
